Cpl, Pennsylvania State Police – Femoral artery bleed
PA State Police officer was at a local hospital when a patient was brought
in with a severe femoral artery bleed. Direct pressure was being applied
with little effect on the bleed. Paramedics estimated that the patient
had already lost three liters of blood. The attending physician requested
a surgical tray and was preparing to perform surgery to stop the bleeding
unsure if he had enough time. The PA State Trooper mentioned to the
doctor that he had some QuikClot in his patrol car and was immediately asked
to get it. The ER doctor had the nurse apply pressure to the artery
above the wound to stop the bleeding while he cleaned the blood from the
wound. QuikClot was applied to the wound and direct pressure was placed
on the wound. The nurse released the pressure to the artery and then
the doctor followed by slowly releasing the pressure to the wound. The
doctor announced that the bleeding had stopped.
